Evacuation Success: Real Patients; Real Fire
Bernie Dyer
Nick Pinizzotto
George Hettenbach
Jim Connell

Suddenly thrust into emergency conditions with the presence of significant smoke on a patient floor resulting from a fire initiated by a welder's torch; HUP's emergency plan was put to a real test where errors of judgement could have resulted in serious injuries to patients being evacuated. Seventy-four patients were moved to safety without a single injury. See and hear how personnel at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania successfully protected those under their care under fire and smoke conditions.

(Bernie Dyer; Director of Safety Management; HUP; Former Deputy Fire Chief, City of Philadelphia Fire Department where he managed fire-fighting and fire prevention forces.
Nick Pinizzotto: Associate Director, Safety Management: HUP; Former Laboratory Safety Officer at Thomas Jefferson University & Hospital.
George Hettenbach; Safety Manager: HUP; Former Safety Manager at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Jim Connel; Safety Coordinator; HUP; Former Fire Prevention Specialist for the Philadelphia Fire Department.)

Workplace Violence
Robert Horgan

Security Officers are called upon to handle a multitude of requests from opening doors to controlling a patient, visitor, or staff that has become aggressive and threatens the safety of those around them. Each facility handles explosive situations differently, many calling for backup from their local police. With the continuous reduction in the number of security officers on duty it is imperative for those called upon to respond ably, professionally and with confidence.

(Robert Horgan is the founder of Law Enforcement & Security Education Services, Inc. (LESES). Mr. Horgan has over 30 years of experience as a trainer in the law enforcement and security fields. His vast experience includes security operations at Abington Hospital, Abington, PA and as an officer in the Philadelphia Police Department. He is considered an expert on the professional management of aggression and workplace violence.)
